Shelter in Grund Forest

On the northern side of Vejle Fjord, this shelter site is located in a peaceful forest area near the coast. Here, you can stay overnight for free without booking.

Stay in a shelter by Vejle Fjord

Grund Forest (Skov) is located on the northern side of Vejle Fjord, right between Daugård Beach and Hotel Vejlefjord. The forest is part of Denmark's longest coastal forest. Although Grund Forest is quite scenic, it also has relatively few visitors, making it a peaceful experience to stay at the forest's shelter site.

At the shelter site, there is one shelter that accommodates 6-8 people. Additionally, there is a fire pit with a grill and access to a multi-toilet. Remember to bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer. You can gather firewood from the forest floor, but it's a good idea to bring your own if you want to ensure dry wood.

The site is situated in a clearing in Grund Forest, very close to the coast. However, there are good windbreaks, so wind is not a challenge. Access to the shelter from the land is through the forest. There is a small parking lot at a red barn on Grundvej, near the entrance to a dog park. From there, you can walk about a kilometer through the forest to reach the shelter site.

You can also access the site from the beach, where it is marked with a post.

The shelter cannot be booked

The shelter site in Grund operates on a first-come, first-served basis. It is not permitted to refuse others if there is space for more people in the shelter. Staying overnight at the site is free of charge.

Free tenting in Grund Forest

Grund Forest is one of the Danish forests designated for free camping. It is the only forest around Vejle Fjord that allows free camping. Here, you are permitted to pitch a tent anywhere in the forest. You may camp for one night in a tent, but please note that open fires are only allowed at the fire pit in the shelter area.

Take a walk in the forest

Grund Skov is perfectly situated for exploring nature. The shelter site is very close to both Rohden Ådal and the winding paths near Hotel Vejlefjord. Both can be accessed from the land and along the coast. Along the coast, it is not far to the beautiful Træskohage Lighthouse.
