The Mill in Gylling

In the picturesque village of Gylling, a beautiful Dutch-style windmill stands as a landmark for the town. Inside the mill, there is an exhibition that you can visit by appointment. The mill also regularly hosts events.

Beautiful Dutch windmill in Gylling

South of Odder lies the village of Gylling, where a windmill has been operating since 1860. Today, the mill stands as beautifully as it did when it was new.

Gylling Mill is a so-called gallery mill, meaning it has a platform around it from which the miller could control the mill's speed. The lower part of the mill is brick, while the upper part is clad in black roofing felt. The mill features long shuttered blades and an onion-shaped cap.

History of Gylling Mill

The original mill was built in 1860—many of Denmark's Dutch-style windmills were erected around this time. However, being a miller in Gylling did not seem to be a lucrative business, as the mill had many owners and collapsed in a storm in 1906 due to poor maintenance.

A new mill was constructed on the same site in 1908. In 1930, it was struck by lightning but was repaired and continued operating until 1963. Over the following years, Gylling Mill fell into disrepair but was saved from demolition by the Odderegnens Forening for Bygnings- og Landskabskultur. In 1992, the mill was sold to Gylling Mølles Venner.

Thanks to volunteers and local enthusiasts, the mill still stands today and undergoes regular renovations. In 2023, the gallery platform was replaced.
